Read this first: the numbers are reported and approximate

Compensation for this role moves fast and varies enormously by company, level, and equity. Everything below is reported or approximate, drawn from public aggregators (levels.fyi, Glassdoor, 6figr), job posts, and 2026 industry reports — and public aggregators tend to lag the live market by several months. Treat these as ranges to calibrate expectations, not quotes.

One structural point dominates everything: at frontier AI labs in 2026, equity is reportedly 60–70% of total compensation. Base salaries across payers differ by maybe 2.5x, but total-comp differs by 5x or more — and the gap is almost entirely equity. So a "base salary" number tells you very little about the real package.

United States — Palantir FDSE

Palantir is the reference point because it originated the role. As of mid-2026, levels.fyi reported FDSE total compensation roughly in the $171K–$295K band with a median near $211K, and higher figures (into the $400K+ range) at senior levels. Glassdoor's US base estimates clustered lower (around a $155K average base, since base excludes equity).

By level, reported total comp looked roughly like: mid-level $205K–$300K, senior $300K–$486K, and staff $630K+. As always, equity and refreshers swing these materially.

United States — frontier AI labs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.)

Frontier labs pay at the top of the market. Reported 2026 packages put mid-to-senior Applied AI engineers around $350K–$550K total comp, with staff and principal levels crossing $600K and the most senior packages reported north of $785K — and principal-level total comp reported past $1M at the extreme.

These are top-of-market, equity-heavy numbers, not what a typical Applied AI earns. The broad market for the role in 2026 is more commonly cited around $300K–$600K total comp in the US, with the seven-figure figures reserved for senior-plus people at the hottest labs.

India (INR) — three very different tiers

India compensation splits into three categories that pay very differently, so a single "India number" is misleading.

Global AI labs hiring remote-India talent (often USD-denominated) reportedly pay the most: roughly ₹35–55 LPA for junior (0–2 years), ₹55–90 LPA for mid (3–6 years), and ₹90 LPA to ₹1.5+ crore for senior (7+ years). MNC AI platforms with India offices (Databricks, Snowflake, Salesforce and similar) reportedly pay around ₹22–35 LPA junior, ₹35–55 LPA mid, and ₹55–80 LPA senior. India-based AI startups typically start lower, around ₹18–28 LPA plus equity.

For calibration, a small, older Glassdoor India sample for Palantir Applied AI (12 salaries, mid-2025) showed an average near ₹12.35 LPA — almost certainly local hires rather than global-remote packages, which illustrates how much the hiring tier matters. Bengaluru is generally the highest-paying Indian AI hub, often a 20–30% premium.

What actually moves your number

Three levers dominate: the company tier (frontier lab > MNC platform > startup, by a wide margin), your level (equity scales super-linearly at senior+), and whether the package is USD-denominated global-remote or a local market rate. Geography within the US has largely converged toward parity for this role, and the on-site versus remote base gap is small (a few percent).

The practical takeaway: optimize for the company tier and the level you can credibly clear, and read the equity terms carefully — that's where the real money is and where the real risk lives.
